What is Cellular Core Technology?
Cellular core construction of PVC conduit & duct involves the simultaneous extrusion of three layers, all composed of the same high quality PVC resin. Co-extruded PVC plastic, with a cellular core center and concentric inner and outer solid layers, make up the conduit or duct walls. The PVC center layer contains a chemical blowing agent, introduced to expand the cell structure, thus removing density and weight from the conduit or duct. With the PVC skins arranged on either side of the cellular core, the radial force compression increases the strength. The end result is a lighter and higher quality, more cost-effective conduit or duct. Cellular core conduit products are available in Schedule 40, Schedule 80, and DB120. Schedule 40 & 80 meet the requirements of UL-651 NEMA TC2. Our DB120 meets the requirements of ASTM and NEMA TC-6 and TC-8 specifications. All of our cellular core conduit and duct products are rated for use with 90° C cable.
Currently in the PVC conduit & duct market, the majority of product sold is manufactured using solid wall technology. Solid wall PVC conduit & duct is manufactured with highly filled PVC resins, which may lower costs, but result in heavy, brittle and inconsistent product. In contrast, conduit & duct manufactured using the latest cellular core technology and prime PVC resin does not contain fillers. PVC cellular core conduit & duct products do meet or exceed all specified requirements and results in a higher, more cost efficient product.
